This solution explains the the difference between AutoCAD Release 12 and earlier SHX fonts, Big Fonts, and Unicode fonts.
Solution
In AutoCAD Release 12 and earlier releases, fonts that supported the Unicode character encoding standard were not available. The AutoCAD SHX fonts in those releases used only 255 characters. Autodesk developed Big Fonts to extend or replace the regular fonts to include characters for specific countries. When combined with the older SHX fonts it increased the possible number of characters by an order of magnitude to 65535. The older SHX fonts are 7-bit fonts, and the Big Fonts are 8-bit fonts. When you use these fonts, AutoCAD first looks in the Big Font for the character it needs; if it does not find the character, it will then looks in the 7-bit font.
Note: The AutoCAD Help file contains more information about this subject.
For AutoCAD Release 14, Autodesk developed Unicode SHX fonts to replace the SHX fonts supplied in previous releases of the product. A single Unicode font, due to its large character set, is capable of supporting most languages. However, some languages, such as Japanese, use thousands of characters and a Unicode font by itself might not be adequate. To support these languages, AutoCAD still uses Big Font files, which can replace or supplement some of the characters in the Unicode font.
