Hallo Maik!
A number of popular consumer-grade video cards are based on the Nvidia TNT / TNT2 and GeForce / GeForce2 chips. Customers running video cards based on these chipsets may experience decreased video performance once a certain number of graphics windows have been opened in SolidWorks. Typically this problem occurs after 3 - 5 graphics windows are opened in SolidWorks, and affects display performance in all graphics windows opened subsequently.
This is not a SolidWorks problem, but is due to a limitation of UBB (Unified Back Buffer) support in the Detonator3 video driver for the TNT, TNT2, GeForce and GeForce2 chipsets. Currently NVIDIA has no plans to address this limitation in future driver releases for these chips. For customers using professional 3D CAD applications such as SolidWorks NVIDIA recommends their Quadro chipset, which does not have this limitation
V5.32 of the Detonator 2 driver from Nvidia does not have this limitation, and can be downloaded from the "Driver Library" section on Nvidia’s web site. Once the v5.32 of Detonator2 driver has been installed you must reboot the machine. Then follow these steps to ensure that UBB support is enabled:
1. Open the Display Properties dialog box from the Control Panel, Display
2. Click on the Nvidia tab
3. Click on the "Additional Properties" button
4. Click on the "OpenGL Settings" tab
5. Scroll down the list of check boxes under the heading "Performance & compatibility options". The last item in the list should be "Use unified back/depth buffer". This MUST be checked.
