Hallo Leute,
What is it?
Unigraphics has enabled the Parasolid support for Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP). This option allows Unigraphics to take advantage of systems that have more than one CPU. This is only supported on SUN and Windows NT systems.
How do I use it?
If you have a system with more than one CPU, you can enable SMP by setting the environment variable UGII_SMP_ENABLE to 1. SMP support is disabled by default.
Why should I use it?
The performance of certain Parasolid operations, such as Booleans, silhouette generation and mass property calculations are improved when this option is set. Some operations may get as much as a 30% performance boost by using dual processors. As with any performance improvement, it is dependent on the particular part and operation that is being done.
Where can I find it?
The environment variable is listed in your $UGII_ROOT_DIR/.ugii_env. You could also set this variable in your environment.
Also, the following came from the development . The areas that are multithreaded:
1. Booleans. This can have a 0-15% improvement on modelling update. The improvement really depends on the part.
2. Hidden Line Rendering. This has a 5-15% improvement on both generating a modelling HLR representation (MB3->Display->Hidden Line), and bringing up a Hidden line view on a drawing. Bringing up a single Hidden line view on a drawing shows the most improvement.
3. Mass Properties. This will have a 20-40% improvement. The algorithm is well suited to multiprocessors, unfortunately is not a commonly used function.
4. Silhouette generation. This will have a 5-10% improvement in generation a display with silhouettes turned on.
Overall we have found that a users improvement from have multiprocessors is seldom more that 10%. You get some productivity gains in that one processor can handle OS things (like mail) while UG is off processing on the other.
Dirk
