I'm working as free lance designer for a customer, and he wants me to use OSD and MM trough the internet (normal 7M/512k dsl lines on both sides, so transfer rate is around 64 kb/sec). This make the daily work very boring due to internet latency, so I studied possible solutions.
The "Cocreate" solution is the Multisite software, but it is really overpriced if compared to my year income (6000 euros for a permaent license, and each node requires its own license, so two licenses are needed for me and my customer).
The hardware solution is something like "Riverbed" products. They sounds very interesting, but the cost is around 7-8000 euros!
The poor man software solution is to compress data before sending: MM client and server exchange data in 3d-data format, with no compression, but it is possible to force the system to compress them! I attach a little manual on how to do the job, by the use of an SSH channel. I guess that same results could be obtained by the use of a VPN channel, but I'm more experienced on SSH rather than VPN, so I choose the first one. Once ssh compressed channel is established, it is possible to see that transfer time is reduced to around 1/3 of the "uncompressed" time.
hope this paper will be interesting for MM remote users!
Please feel free to make comments and suggestions.
Best Regards, Ale.
