Hello other Compass users,

We, VOSTALMG B.V., are very angry about the fact that AutoDesk has decided to drop Cimmetry AutoVue as native document viewer within Compass 5, without a suitable replacement.

The DWF option is a farce, it is not a native viewer, DWF-files have to be generated by the Workstations, and stored at the server. This slows the stations down, generates unnecessary network traffic and uses a lot of diskspace. It is something that all Compass users also using the jobserver option could have installed long ago if wanted, just make a job generating a DWF of every released drawing. Yet somehow we never did. Guess why.....

Apart from that, there is no solution for viewing Office and other files... This is ridiculous, since we use Compass also to store our office and other files, not just AutoDesk type of files. They suggest on the net to use IE plug-ins, but they are unable themselves to get that solution to work.

We bought Compass as a solution with a built in native viewer for all file formats.

We refuse to accept the DWF workaround, this is an unworkable stopgap.

We want AutoDesk to bring back a native viewer for all file formats in Compass 5 a.s.a.p., their current solution stinks. We cannot roll out Compass 5 this way, we'll be causing a riot under our users. Yet we need to roll out Compass 5, since we want to upgrade to Inventor 11....

We are very interested in your opinion, as colleague Compass users, about this matter.

If you think the same about the disappearance of a native all format viewer, please respond. We are willing to take the lead in delivering a strong message to AutoDesk that this is unacceptable.

Hello,

I don`t know, wy You are so angry!?
You can use an other viewer.

Just ask your supporter,who was installing your Compass, for another viewer. That`s all. Sometimes there are more than one posibility.

Hello Patron,

Thanks for your answer, but why should we install (read buy) a third party viewer? We paid for licences with a multiformatviewer (Cimmetry) built into it.

We are using full licences from Cimmetry by the way, for those users that need them. But buying such a license for all our users would be very expensive.

Hello,
You can use the viewer from compass 2005. You don`t need a third one.
please ask your supporter and try out.
I don`t know, what he was telling you. And i downt know the details of licenceagreement, but when you have had the 2005 version ist must be possible to use it.
You asked your Supporter, Didn`t you?

Yes, we have Compass 2005, which indeed came with the Cimmetry Viewer (as did Compass 2000).

Yes, we asked our supplier, we installed a test server together, and we've been bullying them for two weeks now to come up with a solution. They have contacted Autodesk up to the level of the Dutch and above that the EMEA Product Manager - no answer till now

If it's as simple as you say it is, we have got a mighty bunch of people who do not know their products or get simple questions answered by people who do know.

I sincerely hope it is as simple as you say, then we can go forward with our rollout plans for Compass 5 and Inventor 11

Hello Patron,

You we're right about the possibility to use the AutoVue(Cimmetry) licenses that came with Compass 2005 (and earlier versions) in Compass 5. 

This is however a short term solution only, since these licenses will not be updated anymore, and sooner or later will start to fail on not-updated file formats.

We will have a direct discussion however with AutoDesk on the level of the EMEA-manager about the DWF-viewer 'future'.

We will keep you all posted on the answers we get from AutoDesk on the ousting of AutoVue, the new DWF-format viewing and how they think they are going to solve the issue of the many file formats that are not supported by DWF, and thus cannot be previewed anymore. (unless you are willing to pay extra!   for licences for an external viewer ofcourse).

For other users:

Here's how you reactivate the AutoVue viewer from Compass 2005

In order to reuse the "old" preview, follow these steps:

1. Locate the path of the old viewer: to do this, you need an "old" Compass 2005 client installation. The standard path is "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Productstream Compass 2005\bin\Preview\bin". Copy the files to the Productstream Compass 5 directory on the new client.

If different, search for the "...\Preview\bin" folder.

2. In the "compass.ini" file of Compass 5, located in the "server" folder, add a line pointing to the new viewer directory:

CMPPREVIEWPATH=C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Productstream Compass 2005\bin\Preview\bin

Of course, you have to use the correct path: in the example above the default path is used.

3. Reboot the Compass 5 Client
