TurboCADables: 4 TurboCAD Color Palettes
INTRODUCTION...
I've assembled a collection of 4
color palettes for TurboCAD (v6/v5/v4/v3). Included are (1) the
Hewlett-Packard DesignJet 750C Plus (large format inkjet printer)
256-color palette, (2) the Netscape named 140-color palette, (3)
a cross-platform (browser-safe) 67-color palette, and (4) the
AutoCAD ACI 256-color palette. Colors for the Hewlett-Packard
DesignJet palette are based on the "Palette Demo" that
can be dumped from the DesignJet. Colors for the cross-platform
palette were selected from Lynda Weinman's The
Browser-Safe Color Palette.
The new color
palettes are each in four accompanying ASCII text files:
- "tcp1mk TCAD
Palette designjet.txt" (DOS name: TCP1MK~~.TXT).
This is the Hewlett-Packard DesignJet 750C Plus 256-color
"Palette Demo". The TurboCAD "No
Color" color has been retained, and the remaining
255 colors were selected from the 256-color DesignJet
"Palette Demo"; the DesignJet "80%
Gray" (color 15) was omitted because TurboCAD
palettes are restricted to a maximum of 256 colors.
- "tcp2mk TCAD
Palette netscape.txt" (DOS name: TCP2MK~~.TXT). This
is the Netscape named 140-color palette.
- "tcp3mk TCAD
Palette x-platform.txt (DOS name: TCP3MK~~.TXT). This is
a cross-platform (browser-safe) 67-color palette. Note
that the TurboCAD color names have been retained
from the default TurboCAD color palette, but the colors
have been assigned a different RGB triplet.
- "tcp4mk TCAD
Palette autocad.txt" (DOS name: TCP4MK~~.TXT). This
is the AutoCAD ACI 256-color color palette. Note that the
AutoCAD ACI color palette is constructed from
"real" number RGB triplets, and these
"real" number RGB triplets were rounded off to
the nearest "integer" RGB values.

INSTALLATION...
To install, follow the
instructions below:
- Exit TurboCAD (if
running).
- Backup the TurboCAD
INI (configuration settings) file. The name and
location of the INI file will depend on the version of
TurboCAD. For TurboCAD v6, the file name is TCW60.INI and
the default location is either the
"\IMSI\TCW60\Program" or
"\IMSI\TCWP60\Program" folder. For TurboCAD v5,
make a backup copy of TCW50.INI located in the
"\IMSI\TCW50\Program" folder. For TurboCAD v4,
backup TCW40.INI located in
"\IMSI\TCW40\Program". For TurboCAD v3, backup
TCW30.INI located in "\IMSI\TCW30\Program".
(Confused? Try using Windows "Find..." to
locate the TurboCAD INI file by entering: TCW?0.INI )
- Backup the TurboCAD
INI file before proceeding to the next step! You'll
need the backup copy of the INI file if you decide to
uninstall the new color palette.
- Using an ASCII text
editor, open one of text files containing a color
palette described above, and the TurboCAD INI
(configuration settings) file (TCW60.INI, TCW50.INI,
TCW40.INI, TCW30.INI, or equivalent).
- Find the
[Color_Palette] section in the TurboCAD INI file and
replace just this section with the contents of one
of the text files containing a palette described
above.
- Save the TurboCAD INI
file in ASCII text format. (That's it, you're done. The
new color palette will be available next time you run
TurboCAD.)
Note that drawings and templates
created with a given TurboCAD color palette will still
retain those colors even if a different color palette is
installed; the properties of those colors will be displayed in
TurboCAD as a RGB triplet. I have not found this to cause any
problems; you can retain the earlier colors or select new colors
using a newly installed color palette.
(I haven't encountered
any problems using the new color palettes; for instance, I use
the HP DesignJet palette on a regular basis. But I cannot be held
responsible for problems you perceive the new color palettes
cause.)

HOW TO UNINSTALL...
To "uninstall" the new
color palette, restore your backed-up TurboCAD INI file. Note
that uninstallation will not affect drawing files and templates
that were created with the new color palette!
